A print-on-demand T-shirt business is a great way for anyone to get started with making passive income. It is easy to do, and best of all it doesn’t cost much.
You are only three short steps away from being in your very own print-on-demand business.
- Determine your niche
- Create your designs
- Upload your designs
That is all there is to it. But, of course, this is the broad strokes, and there is more detail which we will get into next.

Picking Your Niche
Arguably, niche selection is the most critical step in the process. It would help if you had a niche that has high traffic but is not super competitive. Why? Because if you choose something very competitive, you won’t get the traffic you need to make sales because your competition will. How do you know if you have picked the right niche? Use Merch Informer.
Merch Informer
Merch Informer is a great tool to tell you if your niche idea is good or bad. There is a free trial, so you can sign up, use it to confirm your niche, and then cancel. If you decide to keep it, so you have it for future niche analysis, it is only $9.99 per month. You can get your free trial here. (Code passiveincome20 for a discount).
Once you have signed up and logged in, follow these steps.
- Go to competition checker (on left side of screen. )
- Enter your keyword. If more than one word put quoatations around it to get an accurate analysis.
- You will see a letter grade and you are looking for an A but you may also get a B, C, D, or F. The worse the letter grade the higher the competition. I would strive for a niche that gets an A but a B would be okay. Nothing beyond that as your designs will just get lost among all the competition.
Why is this tool better than other keyword research tools. It is better because it gives you print-on-demand data from Merch By Amazon, keywords being used, and some of the top designs on Merch By Amazon that you can use for inspiration. Other keyword checkers are pulling from the entire internet, which may be wildly inaccurate. So now you are ready to move on to creating your designs.
Creating Your Designs
Now you are getting into the fun part of actually creating a design. There is a tool for this that makes it much easier called Placeit. Placeit is $15 per month and will make the creation step so much easier. How to use Placeit:
- In the search bar enter your keyword. For Placeit you may need to use a broader term to find more designs.
- On the left hand side choose T shirt designs.
- Pick your design by clicking it.
- Make changes to make it your own.
- Download and then use the Placeit tool to resize it to 4500 pix x 5400 pix. When it pops up after you hit download there is a button that says view all. Click this and it will bring up the design and you can resize it. This size is an Amazon requirement and it will work everywhere else too. Resizing it now will save you a ton of headaches. Then click download again.
You are now ready to upload your design to your selling platform.
Alternative to Placeit is to use Canva. Canva is an excellent tool for creating designs that you can download. Canva is $13 per month and is another perfect way to create.
Upload Your Designs
Teespring
With Teespring, you can upload your designs for free. But the best part is Teespring generates around 17 million visitors per month, so it’s a big deal. Just create your account, and once you have, click on start designing.
- You should choose the men’s unisex T shirts as that is the greatest seller. A comfort or classic T is best.
- Don’t offer for than 5 colors.
- Add on 5 products such as a T shirt, hoodie, long sleeve shirt, tank top, and a mug.
- Hit publish and you are in business.
- Go to settings and add how you are going to be paid such as PayPal. (you won’t be able to add any more designs unless this is done)
- This step only applies to Teespring but click on stores and then create. You can give your store a name an add the T shirt only. If someone clicks on the T shirt they will see the other items as well.
- Create an Instagram account for this store where you can post images of your designs. You will have a link to your Teespring store on your Instagram account. The reason for doing this is with Teespring you need a few sales before they will start marketing your designs and this is a way to get them. The other two platforms Red Bubble and Merch By Amazon don’t have that requirement.
- You can utilize Placeits mockups to put your designs on models and then you will have a nice image to put on Instagram.
Redbubble
The next step is to add your design to Redbubble. Redbubble has about 19 million visitors per month. Having multiple sales platforms is an excellent part of the print-on-demand strategy; you can sell your designs on all three platforms.
- Click on signup
- Add designs
- Add your method of getting paid
That is quick and easy.
Merch By Amazon
Merch By Amazon is the biggest platform, with around 2 billion visitors per month. First, you will need to sign up and get accepted for this one. Once you are accepted, follow the steps to upload your designs.
Key To Success
You are going to want to have a lot of great designs. So keep adding new designs and new niches. Try to get up to 100 designs, but make sure they are good ones in good niches. Once you have one hundred designs, you can sit back and enjoy the passive income.
Conclusion
Print on demand is one of the truly great business models. Anyone can do it; it is free other than a couple of low-priced tools that you can cancel once you stop designing. From there it is no cost to you. All three print-on-demand platforms are entirely free as they take their money when your design sells. It is tough to beat when there is no out-of-pocket cost, no inventory, no marketing, no website development for you to do.
