Millions of Americans suddenly and unexpectedly lost their jobs as the pandemic ravaged the nation. No one could have predicted the economic impact and how many people would find themselves without a job.
So, what do you do?
You have two options: wait for life to throw you a bone or go out and make your own destiny.
I vote for the latter – it gives you way more control over your situation. Plus, if you start a small business or a side hustle, the income can help to pursue your financial dreams now and well into the future.
Let’s turn life’s lemons into lemonade.
Are ya with me?
What type of business can you start?
It seems scary at first – what type of business could you even start?
Whether you go back out into the working world and start a side hustle or you make the new gig your only income for the time being, here are three questions to ask yourself:
1. Are your skills teachable?
Someone out there could learn from what you know, and it’s easier than ever to start a course. Online platforms like Udemy and Teachable make it simple for anyone to create and start making money from a course.
You don’t need a crazy amount of technical skills easier – most course software programs are drag-and-drop.
Create videos that showcase your expertise and bring viewers coming back for more.
Eventually, you can set up a membership-based business that gives your audience access to your exclusive teachings to earn even more cash.
2. Do you love to craft?
Online stores are all the rage today and they are super simple to set up. Whether you make physical or digital products, there are plenty of platforms out there, such as selling on Etsy or even making money with Facebook Marketplace.
Showcase your talents and have fun with marketing your ideas on social media. In no time at all, you’ll be making money doing what you love.
You never know when your business will take off, making you more than just side hustle cash.
3. What are you good at?
Think about your skills. The skills you used at your old job, the skills you learned in college or training, and the skills you learned during quarantine. Think about how those skills can help others.
Here are a few quick ideas:
- If you’re good at writing, why not write blog posts or website content for small businesses? Think of all the people that run a business – the truth is that most don’t have the know-how or time to write. But you can write for them and get paid to do it!
- If you’re good at design and technology, help new businesses set up their websites, create their logos, or develop Pinterest and marketing graphics.
- If you’re a bookkeeper, offer your expertise to new business owners to help them get set up and keep their books up to date.
- If you’re a whiz at email, managing appointments and calendars, organizing documents, or creating processes or systems, becoming a virtual assistant might be exactly what you’re looking for.
- If you love the outdoors, consider starting a pressure-washing business. You can beautify decks, houses, driveways, and more.
What will you do?
The sky is the limit right now. While it’s difficult to be let go so unexpectedly, if we turn it around and create a business, whether a side hustle or full-time business, you can create the life you dream of.
And when you’re your own boss?
You don’t have to worry about losing your job.
Take the skills you’ve earned and turn them into something that not only helps you earn an income but also helps others that may have been in a similar situation as you.
